Speechless Sunday in the western NC mountains - I can't see you

Speechless Sunday in Murphy, NC

Speechless Sunday in the western NC mountains and just over the NC/GA state line we came across this little guy - hey, don’t call him shorty!

Well, whatever his name was he was the cutest and curious little horse. I guess he could still see us with all that mane because he kept following us back and forth the fence line. There are some great Farms and Horse Properties here in the mountains!

They found their mountain get-away in the Hayesville, NC mountains

They found their mountain get-away in the Hayesville, NC mountainsTom and I would like to take time to express our sincerest appreciation to Carol & Lee Barbour. We were fortunate enough to see a property for sale on another realtor’s website that we were very interested in.  Tom had talked with Carol about some other properties and was very impressed with her professionalism.   So we called Carol about the property and immediately she jumped into action.  I’m certain without her prompt attention we might not have gotten this property.  We are very grateful we got The Mountain Living Team as our Realtor. She made a very tense time much easier.  She was committed to making our dream come true.  Her professionChatuge Lake in Hayesville, NCalism is something you don’t see often these days.  She handled the sale, while we were 500 miles away, and kept us informed every step of the way.  She is so pleasant to talk with.  It’s rare these days to find someone with such a great work ethic. She is exactly what you want when you are looking for “your dream come true” We trusted her all and she did not let us down.

Let me just say, this was not and expensive property by most standards, but it was exactly what we were looking for, (it was our dream place) and we were treated like Royalty!

We not only feel like we got the place we dreamed about in the mountains, but we feel like we made some friends on the way!  How great is that!  Tom tells everyone, “If you’re looking for a place in the mountains,  have I got a great Realtor for you”!!  Lee was always there for any help we needed from him.  What a great team to have in your corner!

We will always be grateful to Lee & Carol for helping us reach for our dream!!!

Sincerely,
Tom & Sharon Sturdevant
Citra, Florida

Ramp Festival at the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center

Ramp Festival at the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts CenterCome on out to the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center on Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 11:00-4:00, for the Stecoah Ramp Festival. They’ll be hosting a full-on festival for the 50th anniversary of celebrating ramps in Graham County. Ramps add a wonderful and uniquely pungent flavor to soups, egg dishes, casseroles, rice dishes and potato dishes.  One of our favorite ways to have them is baked in cornbread muffins!

Mountain folks have been gathering and enjoying ramps for generations, but ramps are also now gracing the chef tables of fine restaurants around the country.  Ramps are available for a very limited time each year so take advantage of this opportunity to celebrate this Appalachian spring delicacy.

Craft vendors will cover the Stecoah grounds, and from 1:00-3:00 visitors will have the opportunity to learn traditional Cherokee finger weaving from Shirley Welch.  Paula Nelson will present traditional Cherokee songs and stories from 6:15-7:15 outside on the pavilion.  All of these events are free to the public.

Ramp Festival at the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts CenterThings will really ramp up for the evening with the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center’s annual Ramp Dinner and Concert.   There will be two dinner seatings, one at 5:30 and again at 6:30. The full menu of roasted pork loin, ramp/potato home fries, sautéed fresh greens, honey-glazed carrots, baked apples, coleslaw, corn bread, ramp/cheese biscuits, and strawberry shortcake is served family style and all you can eat.  Dinner price is for $15.95 adults, $9.95 for children 12 and under for dinner and drink, dessert is $2.50 additional.  Dinner reservations are required.

At 7:30 enjoy local favorite, “My Highway” in concert in the Lynn L. Shields Auditorium.  “My Highway” is a group of country boys from Robbinsville, NC that love music, and love a live atmosphere. Born and raised in Robbinsville NC, home of Grammy Award winner Ronnie Milsap, “My Highway” is rapidly becoming a local, regional, and YouTube favorite.
Please call 828-479-3364 for more information and to make dinner reservations or purchase tickets.  Concert tickets and dinner reservations can also be made online at stecoahvalleycenter.com.

Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center is located in a restored 1926 schoolhouse at 121 Schoolhouse Road off Hwy 28 between Bryson City and Fontana Dam.  Come celebrate Appalachian style as we celebrate at the Ramp Festival!

We can all celebrate the 42nd Anniversary of Earth Day!

Celebrate Earth Day Every Day!This Sunday on April 22, 2012 we celebrate the 42nd Anniversary of Earth Day! The following statistics are eye-opening, to say the least how just little changes can impact our world.
If everyone went vegetarian just for one day, the U.S. would save:
● 100 billion gallons of water, enough to supply all the homes in New England for almost 4 months
● 1.5 billion pounds of crops otherwise fed to livestock, enough to feed the state of New Mexico for more than a year
● 70 million gallons of gas--enough to fuel all the cars of Canada and Mexico Celebrate Earth Day Every Day!combined with plenty to spare
● 3 million acres of land, an area more than twice the size of Delaware
● 33 tons of antibiotics
If everyone went vegetarian just for one day, the U.S. would prevent:
● Greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 1.2 million tons of CO2, as much as produced by all of France
● 3 million tons of soil erosion and $70 million in resulting economic damages
● 4.5 million tons of animal excrement
● Almost 7 tons of ammonia emissions, a major air pollutant
My favorite statistic is this: According to Environmental Defense, if every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetarian foods instead, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off of U.S. roads. See how easy it is to make an impact?

When is Dogwood Winter in Murphy, NC?

When is Dogwood Winter in Murphy, NC? When is Dogwood Winter in Murphy, NC?  We had some chilly temperatures and frost warnings to welcome us this morning. Old-timers in the Appalachians know there are several named "winters" following winter, and Dogwood and Blackberry Winter are perhaps the best known. It’s a term used by Southerners to describe a period of cold weather that coincides with the blooming of the local dogwoods and blackberries, usually occurring in the mid April to May months. The dogwoods are all bloomed out and the blackberries are soon to follow.

With the possibility of frost happening during Dogwood and Blackberry winters, many Southerners here inMurphy, NC wait until after these winters have passed to plant tender vegetables and annuals. The Native Americans also watched for the dogwood blooms as the sign to begin planting corn and other crops.

Take a day off for Golfer’s Day in the western NC Mountains!

Celebrate Golfer’s Day in the western NC Mountains!

Celebrate Golfer’s Day in the western NC Mountains! Some avid golfers might suggest that any and every day is Golfer's Day. But on April 10th, it's official. The only question is, does this day honor the golfer, the sport, or the weather? Well, it's a little of each. Golfer's Day is an opportunity to be thankful that someone invented this addicting, yet relaxing hobby. Also referred to as "Golf Day", there is only one proper way to enjoy this day. And, that's out on the golf course - of course.

When Golfer's Day falls on a weekday - which it is, it is even more special. That means you now have an excuse to take a day off of work and go play a round … or two. Regardless of your score today, you know that even a bad day on the greens, is better than a good day at work.

Murphy, NC makes the Best American Historical Towns You've Never Heard of List

Downtown Murphy, NC 28906 CourthouseMurphy, NC makes the Best American Historical Towns you’ve never heard of List!  Who knew there was a Best American Towns You’ve Never Heard Of list, but there is and our lovely Cherokee County, NC city of Murphy is on it! Here is what they had to say about Murphy, NC but there is so much more...

Over the course of the early 19th century, land-hungry American settlers came head to head with Native American tribes. Native Americans were either violently pushed out of their homes or simply mistreated to the point of defeat; some settlers stole their livestock and burned their towns.

In 1838, the U.S. government ordered the Native Americans to move, then set 7,000 soldiers to forcibly remove Cherokee Indians from their homes. Thousands of Cherokees were forced to move out West, traveling an overland route that follows closely along today's U.S. Highway 72. Over 4,000 Cherokees Murphy, NC makes the Best American Historical Towns you've never heard of listdied on this march, which would later be known as the Trail of Tears. Murphy is just one of many sites you can visit along the Trail of Tears, including any of the National Park Service's Certified Sites.

Murphy boasts the Cherokee County Historical Museum, where visitors can view a wide collection of Native American artifacts or view exhibits on the Trail of Tears and 19th century Cherokee life. You can also stop by Fort Butler, which served as Army headquarters in 1838, housing over 3,000 Cherokee prisoners on the trail. Many of the prisoners' names have been engraved on a commemorative stone wall. Read more on the other towns that made the list too here at  foxnews

Come see the gorillas at Dewar Wildlife in the north GA mountains!

Joe at Dewar Wildlife in Morganton, GAWe attended a very special birthday at Dewar Wildlife in the north GA mountains today for Joe. At 49 years old, Joe is the third oldest male gorilla in a zoo setting and is Dewar Wildlife's iconic resident. Joe started life in Cameroon, Africa and has spent time in several zoos in the USA, but came to this wildlife facility in 2003 and in Joes 49th Birthday Fruit Cake at Dewar Wildlifespite of his advanced age, enjoys tour visitors and the tranquility of the North Georgia Mountains. He certainly didn’t mind our group of 13 joining him in his Villa for his fruit birthday cake either!

Dewar Wildlife (DW) is an advanced holding facility situated on 100 acres in the North Georgia (Blue Ridge) mountains for zoo gorillas that have special needs with potential facilities for gorillas and keepers in a private, secluded and temperate climate. In addition, the DW property can be used for educational camps or programs in conjunction with schools or universities.

Willie B Jr at the Dewar Wildlife in Morganton, GAWe were greeted in the parking area by caretaker/guide Michael and his greeter, Benny the cat and then joined Steuart Dewar and JoBeth for a presentation on Dewar Wildlife Trust. Steuart Dewar has invested millions in the design and development of such an innovative sanctuary for gorillas.  Thirty minutes there and we’d already learned so much and now we were on our way to see some gorillas.

We stopped in first to see Joe and watch him enjoy his fruit birthday cake. Gorillas are strictly vegetarians. Next it was on to  see the other buildings on the facility like the group building, observation, operating room, food prep, etc. and then on to see "The Boys".

Willie B Jr eating a grapefruit at Dewar Wildlife in Morganton, GAIn February 2012, Willie B. Jr. (also known as Kidogo), the only son of Atlanta's famous Willie B. and his 'buddy' Jasiri, also joined the DW facility. Willie B. Jr and Jasiri, "The Boys" as they're called, are are both 13, going on 14, and they get along well together in spite of their quite different personalities. Physically, Willie B. has a far more pronounced sagittal crest, and looks more like an adult male (silverback) than Jasiri who still has more of the look of a younger blackback. Both of them are settling in well at Dewar Wildlife and their new life here in the North Georgia Mountains. There is also talk of Red Pandas possibly coming to DW in the future.

They are especially grateful to Zoo Atlanta for their expression of confidence in working with the DW to house two of their gorillas, especially with Willie B. Jr. being the only son of Atlanta's famous resident gorilla. Overseeing their care and the facility is Zoo Atlanta's, Charles Horton, who personally took care of Willie B. for so many years. It's certainly a wonderful set of circumstances that have resulted in Charles now being associated with both Zoo Atlanta and the Dewar Wildlife Trust where in addition to looking after Joe, he can oversee Willie B.'s son and Jasiri as they spend their active teenage years in the large DW facility and the huge 8.5 acre habitat.

We just can’t begin to tell you what an amazing day and opportunity this was for us to visit the Dewar Wildlife facility today! This is a place where you will not only see these gorillas up close and in a beautiful natural setting, but you’ll learn so much too on this very personal tour. It’s one you won’t ever forget or regret.

Dewar Wildlife is less than a two hour drive from Zoo Atlanta and the Knoxville Zoo, and an hour+ from Chattanooga, Tennessee.  For more information, videos and to find out  What Dewar Wildlife Is  or to book your own private tour or group, please also visit their website at  www.DewarWildlife.org

Attracting Hummingbirds to your home in Murphy, NC

Attracting Hummingbirds to your home in Murphy, NC
Everyone loves seeing these beauties jet back and forth from tree to feeder.
Here are a few great ways to attract hummingbirds for plenty of entertainment ...

www.freeherbpictures.comGrow late blooming nectar sources. Tubular-shape blooms in bright red or orange are ones they really love like Salvia, Bee Balm, Hyssop and Butterfly Weed.

A little place to rest. I know it seems like they never stop moving, but while they do like to dart back and forth, they do rest. They prefer perching on hidden branches, particularly evergreens.

Add some moving water. Hummingbirds drink and bathe on the fly as they dart in and out of oscillating sprinklers. They also love birdbaths and misters - like all the other birds and butterflies do too.

Serve Hummingbird takes a rest on our finger!some fast food.  Sugar water is their energy drink. To mix up a batch of homemade nectar just bring 4 parts water to 1 part sugar to a boil and then let it cool. You don’t need to add food coloring!

2000 miles That’s the flight the Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds - the only widespread hummer species east of the Rockies make every fall when they migrate from Northern climates to their wintering grounds in Mexico and Central America. The trip includes a 600 mile crossing over the Gulf of Mexico.

Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center in western NCMake Your Own Journal!
Friday, April 27, 2012,  10:00 am – 2:00 with break for lunch
Tuition:  $35.00 (includes materials)
Phyllis Jarvinen, creator of artist’s books will teach you how to make a 5.5 x 4.25 book using her handcrafted book cloth and paste paper.  At the end of the class you will take home your own handmade book with long stitch binding.  In a long stitch binding the signatures (groups of folded pages) of the book's text block are stitched directly to the cover material along the spine.  The long binding stitches are exposed (hence the name) and the text pages open fully when the book is finished.  The exposed stitches on the spine make a beautiful embellishment for the structure.  Phyllis will provide handcrafted book cloth for cover, paste paper, and text weight paper for pages as well as all other tools and materials needed to complete your book.  Feel free to bring your own personal embellishments like ink stamps and lightweight materials to decorate your pages.  For more information about Phyllis go to www.phyllisjarvinen.com

Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center is located in a restored 1926 schoolhouse at 121 Schoolhouse Road off Hwy 28 between Bryson City and Fontana Dam.  Stecoah Valley Center serves Graham County residents and visitors by providing community programs and services as well as the opportunity to experience Southern Appalachian mountain culture through events and classes.  Call 828-479-3364 or visit  www.stecoahvalleycenter.com  for more information.
