Things We Like About Our House- By the owners

From the owner:
In our 51 years of marriage, we have moved twelve times. As a stay-at-home mom following a three and a half year career after college, the quality and features of each home we bought became more carefully defined than the previous home. In 2000, when we made a full-time house of our vacation lake house, I knew, from moving so much, just what was necessary for the lake house to meet our every need, the criteria needed to make it aesthetically pleasing, practical and with every consideration given to creature comfort. It took over a year to put the floor plan in place, with some help from noted Atlanta architect, Norman Davenport Askins. Having read one of his articles, "The Way with Windows" in Veranda magazine, knowing that good windows and doors would contribute enormously to the looks of our house, Norman lent his vision of a knockout plan of sliding French doors and windows and a handsome pitched wood shake and shingle (treated to last forty years) roof with dormers and copper flashing, front and back, that couldn't have pleased us more! He introduced a side main entrance with a covered porch, a custom 12 light front door with four side light panels on each side that further add to the natural light that floods every room. Additionally, the foyer offers a sweeping view through the dining room, hall and study, allowing one to see the outside from the far study window, an unexpected and delightful surprise!. This is called an enfilade, I am told. This house has a flow that surpasses any of the other homes in which we've lived and there have been some nice houses along the way. We have felt very privileged. Norman added his professional touches that were beyond our imagination, and we are very thankful for his many talents in our behalf!
When we bought our Lake Burton cabin in 1971, the selling point was the 180 degree view from east to west from the front deck. Hands down, it was breathtaking, plus looking at the broad lake expanse southward. That view is a dream on a summer's evening, too, when we sit on the front deck and watch the moon rise over the mountain....absolutely exquisite!!! During cooler months, as well as summer, it is a favorite pastime to sit on the front deck off the kitchen and feel the sun and gentle breeze while having lunch or, just gazing at the sunlight dancing on the water over the lake, or reading a good book while catching a little vitamin D, feet propped and comfy in the quiet solitude. Our four children and their friends will tell you they have enjoyed for years jumping from our front deck into fifteen feet of water below. How convenient can it get???
At the time we bought, we didn't really appreciate that we were only 7/10 mile from highway 76 and only 15 minutes from Clayton, but, after many years of visiting friends on the lake, whose homes took forever to reach over graded roads and many curves, we've become extremely grateful for out short, dead-end road with nine homes and close proximity to town.
Another wonderful proximity is the distance to Waterfall Country Club where we enjoyed the first seven years of its' existence. It's only a little more that a chip and a putt away (depending on the player!), so our years of golf, swimming, exercise and social activities there were terrific, as well as convenient, being just across hwy 76!!! Luck of the draw!!!
Being a traditionalist, I chose true-divided windows for our house; they just have a great look and they, along with the doors extending from every room onto the deck, lakeside, are thermopane, so we have what they call "a tight house". Our doors and windows are Pella, top of the line, Architectural Series. Sliding screen doors afford fresh air when that is one's inclination and, of course, window screens.
For serious sunbathing, the permanent 27'x30' dock offers rays from 9 to 5. After 5, if libations are in order, there is shade on this same deck. We like that a lot!!
For years, I have wanted a potting shed and the one here has been made into all I need, on ground level, with shelves and cabinets beneath the den; water is close-by for transplanting, etc.; the floor is concrete, so if I make a mess, it's no big deal!
We like our insulated two-slip boathouse underneath the kitchen, too, because it gives us an unobstructed view of the lake! The dark brown canvas custom cover over the boathouse front has a great look, as well. The boat lifts have been carefully constructed, and, with the flip of a switch, lift the boats to dry storage.
The 6' free-form stacked stone wall edging the rear terrace on the north side of the entire house is very pleasing, aesthetically; maybe that has something to do with the men who built it, singing and laughing and enjoying the fruits of their labor through it all! English ivy in free-form beds and pots beside the three steps into the two living room doors and one to the back hall add to the traditional look and is so simple to maintain! I especially like the ivy espaliered on the wall, where one's eyes are drawn to it from the living room.
Our 24'x30' garage features a workshop which has been a godsend to my husband; he's restored two antique wooden boats there. Plus, there's space for exercise equipment, if one so desires... I use a treadmill there when it's raining too hard to take a walk. Plus, there's a full second floor over the garage/barn, with six dormers and two over-sized screened and board and batten doors, front and back, for ventilation.
Since we have lived on Buck Road, there has been only one change of ownership of the nine homes, which is remarkable in today's world. Our immediate neighbors on either side moved within a year of when we did in l971. We have been fast friends, throughout, and do not hesitate to call on one another for anything. Our friendship is so close and comfortable; this is a huge benefit of living here; we look out for one another and all this fosters a real sense of safety and security and well-being. We've shared a lot of laughs and tears over the years.
As our knees have grown old, having living quarters on one floor is a real boon to living comfortably; having a house with two or three floors would be difficult, even though we have an attic that was studded and plumbed for finishing two bedrooms, a rec room and a bath, should there be a desire, but, we've used it for storage, which has been quite handy.
It's especially nice that the master bedroom suite is seperate from the guest wing (good for guests as well as homeowners!). Also, the master suite has insulated walls, which offer accommodations for sound sleep for the older folks, should there be any late-nighters who want to party til the wee hours. It was an unexpected surprise to realize we could see the lake from the master bedroom windows, as the master is on the northwest corner of the house. Another appreciated feature of master bedroom quarters is the location of the laundry room off the master closet. Have had laundry rooms off the kitchen and in the basement in other houses....off the master is the best! Finally, the oversize master closet...I don't have to put winter clothes away for storage because there is adequate space to keep all seasons' clothes there all winter long!!! This is superb!!!
Again, the traditionalist, six-paneled solid wood doors are throughout the house, with Baldwin black door knobs. Floors are all polyurethaned pine, even in bathrooms, which has worked well.
Built-in cabinetry and shelving in closets, bookcases and storage areas abound in this house. One says you can't have too much storage, etc., but, after careful planning, we came pretty close and have been pleased with all of it. Particularly pleasing are the pine custom kitchen cabinets. I saw a magazine picture that stole my heart and the cabinet maker duplicated perfectly what I saw, including the heavy-duty deep drawers and Sub-Zero refigerator paneling. The black countertops set off the pine cabinets, floors and walls beautifully. The large breakfast room table is a favorite gathering spot as it overlooks the front deck and lake. More storage pluses are the pantry, just off the kitchen on one side and utility room, just off the kitchen on the other side. The pantry has heavy duty beadboard double doors with narrow shelving for spices on the inside of the doors, so there's no searching through a deep shelf, since they're all lined up and visible. Then, the utility room is spacious and handily located, for cleaning supplies, etc. Another bonus is the large shelved closet in the dining room. I LOVE all my storage!!!
All ceilings are either 1x6 v-notch tongue-and-groove, tongue-and-groove or beadboard, most of which is painted (kitchen and one hall, bath and bedroom are natural). The foyer, hall, master bedroom, dining room and living room have painted dry wall above a chair rail with either beadboard or tongue-and-groove below. All these textured differences add a varied and complimentary mixture of rustic and mountain touches with traditional.
Probably my most favorite room in the house is the living room. One can experience a peace and serenity here, whether alone, reading, playing the piano or meditating. It's also a nice place to gather with friends. The vaulted, beamed ceiling, the view of the stacked, stone wall off the terrace, all create a warm and comfortable feel.
This is the happiest house I have ever known!!!
