Cherokee County Calendar of Events for 2009 EVERY MONTH Folk School Concerts Folk School Concerts are open to the public. They are scheduled for most (but not all) Friday evenings at 7:30. The public is welcome to enjoy a public display of Folk School student crafts from 6:40-7:00 p.m. in the Keith House Community Room, where the concerts are held. Free Admission. Bi-monthly Saturday Night Dances Bi-monthly Saturday night dances at the John C. Campbell Folk School, 8-11 p.m. Contra and square dances for adults, children, beginners, singles, and couples, with live music and callers from near and far. Visit the John C. Music in the Shoppes of Murphy The 1st Friday of each month, March thru October, a live band performs from 7-10 p.m. The 3rd Friday of each month is Dance Night at the Daily Grind. January 4 Cormac Breatnach, an Irish Whistle Player has been playing whistles and the timber flute for more than 20 years. In addition to a solo album and a duo album, he plays on more than 30 cd's of Celtic Music. The concert will begin at 2:30 pm at the John C Campbell Folk School in the Keith House. February 8 Sol Y Canto will be in concert at the John C Campbell Folk School in the Keith House at 2:30 pm. He performs music of Argenito, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Panama, Uruguay, Mexico, and Peru. Their repertoire includes Afro-Latin songs ranging from folk to traditional to contemporary, including compositions. April 16-26 The Dam Kids Gathering is a spring gathering of the folks who were the children in the Fontana Village during the construction of the Fontana Dam in the early 1940's. For more information in this event you can call 828-498-2211
May 29-30 American Cancer Society Relay for Life. This is an annual event that consists of a walk to raise money for the American Cancer Society. June 6 Murphy Spring Festival in downtown Murphy will include crafts, food music, antique car show, family car show and including a kid's corner. November 20 The Murphy Hometown Christmas Celebration begins at 6pm Friday with a tree lighting ceremony, music, and entertainment.
